Good Fences and Thankful Thursday

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 30, 2017
A fence and an animal - a winning combination!

For Thankful Thursday:
I am thankful for my husband. On Sunday we celebrated our 35th anniversary. September 3 was on Friday in 1982, and we had a three-day honeymoon in Arkansas' Ozark Mountains.

I hope you have a beautiful day!

Indigo Bunting, September 6, 2017

ABC Wednesday, Wild Bird Wednesday, and Wednesday Around The World
I is for Indigo Bunting

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 5, 2017
Indigo Buntings, Passerina cyanea, are migratory birds that breed in the United States
and southeastern Canada. They fly south to the Central American countries to spend the Winter months. They get their name from the male's blue coloring; females are brownish.
Indigo Buntings eat seeds, berries, tree buds, and insects.

Have a wonderful day!

Harvest Monday, September 4, 2017

Harvest Monday, Macro Monday 2, and Through My Lens

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 30, 2017
Finally, okra!

My 'Clemson Spineless' okra came up just a few days after planting and grew quickly. Then suddenly, the plants stopped growing. Just stood there week after week. I tried talking to them. I told the plants I would yank them up by the roots if they did not bloom! They just ignored me. They knew I would not really do that.

Then I remembered reading something about 'whipping okra' to make it produce, so I thought
I would give it a try. I used a small stick and beat them gently around their knees, five days in a row, talking to them while I was doing it, telling them it was for their own good.

And it worked! Now I am picking a handful of pods two or three times a week, just the right amount for the two of us!

Happy Gardening!

The Barn Collective, September 3, 2017

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, September 2, 2017
When the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey came through our area on Wednesday, this old barn fell victim to its fury.

But let's remember it as it was when I photographed it last year.

Your birds for today are...

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 19, 2017
Cardinals! The male is a brilliant red.

But the female has red only on her wings and tail. Both have crests they raise when alarmed.

Have a blessed day!

My Garden Right Now, September 2, 2017

Michelle at Veg Plotting has a seasonal meme titled 'My Garden Right Now.' It is to encourage gardeners to show what their gardens look like at the beginning of each season. This is my entry for the Autumn edition.
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, September 2, 2017
Here in the southeastern United States, we are able to grow cool-season vegetables in the early Spring and again as soon as the intense heat of Summer gives way to Autumn's cooler weather. My favorite thing to grow at this time of year is 'Alaska' green peas. They germinate about a week after planting (today Sept. 2), and harvest time is two months later. The vines will grow more than knee-high, so I support them with a section of wire fencing. They will tolerate a light frost, but I am hoping we do not have frost until after harvesting early in November.

Happy Gardening!

Willy Nilly Friday, September 1, 2017

Willy Nilly Friday 5, Sky Watch Friday, and Floral Friday Fotos
(And on Saturday) Camera Critters, and Saturday's Critters

1. Vultures (Sky Watch Friday)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 30, 2017
Clouds began to move in on Wednesday morning. I saw these Vultures drying their wings after a brief, but intense, rain shower that afternoon.

They look so sad, all wet and droopy.

The rain continued Wednesday evening, all day Thursday, and Thursday night for a two day total over 4 inches (10 cm).

2. Katydids (Saturday's Critters and Camera Critters)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 22, 2017
The Northern Katydid or True Katydid, Pterophylla camellifola, is easy to see here on my car windshield, but its wings, resembling leaves, gives it great camouflage in its natural environment. The brown spot behind its head identifies it as a male.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 29, 2017
This is a Fork-Tailed Bush Katydid, Scudderia furcate.

3. Space Alien?
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 29, 2017
The Spiny Orb-Weaver Spider, Gasteracantha cancriformis, is a beneficial spider that is harmless to humans. They eat flying insects (gnats, mosquitoes, wasps, etc.) that get caught in their webs.

Anything that eats mosquitoes is certainly welcome at my house!

4. Good Food: Peaches!
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 29, 2017
I bought a box of nine peaches at Sam's Club last week. They were delicious! I used three to make a peach tart, and ate the others, one each morning with my breakfast cereal. This variety, 'Summer Flame,' was grown in California.

5. Cypress Vine (Floral Friday Fotos)
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, August 30, 2017
Tiny flowers and delicate leaves make the Cypress Vine a pretty addition to any flower garden.

Remember to pray for those along the Gulf Coast devastated by Hurricane Harvey.

Have a wonderful week-end!
