Sapsucker, December 28, 2016

Saturday's Critters, Camera Critters, I'd Rather B Birdin'
ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday
Y is for Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - a North American bird in the Woodpecker family

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, December 22, 2016
I took these two photos through my dining room window. I really should wash my windows and cut that twig out of the way!

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, December 23, 2016
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, Sphyrapicus varius, breed in Canada and the northeastern parts of the United States. In the Winter they migrate south to the southeastern US and Mexico. They bore holes into the inner bark of trees to eat the sap, and they also eat insects caught in the oozing sap. They will come to suet feeders in the Winter. Female Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers have red feathers on their heads, but not on their throats as the males do.

Have a wonderful day!

Merry Christmas! December 24, 2016

I enjoy sending and receiving Christmas cards. I tape the ones I receive to my living room wall as part of my Christmas decorations.

Kingfisher, December 21, 2016

Wild Bird Wednesday, Saturday's Critters, Camera Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, December 4, 2016
Belted Kingfishers, Ceryle alcyon, are the most commonly seen Kingfishers in the United States. Though they are not as colorful as other Kingfishers, they are easily identified by their prominent crest and sharply-pointed bill. They eat small fish, crabs, crayfish, salamanders, lizards, mice, and insects.

You may see them near a pond or lake perched on a tree branch or electric power line watching for their prey in the water below. They also have the ability to hover over the water and dive vertically to catch a fish.

Have a wonderful Christmas!

Monday Mural: Bread, December 19, 2016

Monday Mural, Blue Monday, and Monday Mellow Yellows
Memphis, Tennessee, USA, December 10, 2016
Wonder is a brand of bread sold in Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

It was one of the first breads to be sold pre-sliced (1930), leading to the phrase "the best thing since sliced bread" to describe a new invention or discovery.

Have a great week!

Critters: Donkey, December 17, 2016

Lee County, Mississippi, USA, December 12, 2016
We hardly notice donkeys unless they appear in Christmas pageants, but if you look in pastures with horses or cows you may find one or two.

Donkeys are very important in poor areas where people depend on them to carry loads and provide transportation. And aren't they cute? You just want to reach out and pet them!

Happy Saturday!

Winter Wren, December 14, 2016

ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday
W is for the Winter Wren

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, November 25, 2016
Winter Wrens, Troglodytes hiemalis, are small birds, being only about 4 inches (10cm) in length. Their breeding range includes the Pacific Coast of North America, across central Canada to the Atlantic Coast, and the northeastern parts of the United States. They migrate to the southern United States to spend the Winter months.

I was fortunate to get two photos as these energetic little birds quickly shift positions and dart back and forth. Europeans may see the Winter Wren's cousin the Eurasian Wren, Troglodytes troglodytes.

Have a wonderful day!

Rain, rain, glorious rain! The view across the lake was muted by rain when we met friends for lunch at the Pickwick Inn Restaurant on Monday. This Autumn has been very dry. We are thankful to get rain this week.

These Coots, Fulica americana, feeding on the near shore, didn't seem to mind the rain at all.
