Cardinals, November 29-30, 2016

Ruby Tuesday Too and Wild Bird Wednesday

Male Cardinal, Prentiss county, Mississippi, USA, October 25, 2016
Sunflower seeds will attract Cardinals to your bird feeders. There was a top on this bird feeder until a raccoon tore it off!

Male Cardinal, Prentiss County Mississippi, USA, October 25, 2016
Northern Cardinals, Cardinalis cardinalis, are seen all across the eastern half of the United States. Males are bright red; females are brownish with red highlights on crest, wings, and tail. Their primary sources of food are seeds and insects.

Have a wonderful day!

Blue Monday, Macro Monday 2, Monday Mellow Yellows, and Our World Tuesday

Colbert County, Alabama, USA, November 26, 2016
We are beginning to lose our Autumn color as winds blow the leaves from the trees, revealing beautiful blue skies with fluffy white clouds.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, November 25, 2016
My Carolina Jessamine Vine, Gelsemium sempervirens, begins to bloom as cooler Autumn weather arrives. If we have a mild Winter, it will continue to bloom into the Spring.

Have a great week!

Saturday's Critters, Camera Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'
Baldwyn, Mississippi, USA, November 21, 2016
With very little rain for the past two months, the water level in this small pond is steadily decreasing. I am wondering if low water makes catching fish easier for this Great Blue Heron.

Have a beautiful week-end!

Happy Thanksgiving, November 23, 2016

ABC Wednesday, Wild Bird Wednesday, and Signs, Signs

T is for Thanksgiving - a day set aside for the purpose of giving thanks for our many blessings. In the United States it is the fourth Thursday of November each year.

Booneville, Mississippi, USA, November 22, 2016
.

And...
T is for Titmouse, Parus bicolor: a sparrow-sized bird of the eastern United States, often seen at bird feeders in the Winter.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, November 2, 2016
After visiting the bird feeders, it came onto the porch to drink from our dog's water bucket.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Good Fences
Lauderdale County, Alabama, USA, November 7, 2016
There is a picnic area where the Natchez Trace Parkway crosses the Tennessee River. And the spit of land under the bridge is a popular spot for fishing.

This weathered fence runs along the river bluff near the parking lot.

Roosters, November 12, 2016

Colbert County, Alabama, USA, October 27, 2016
These two roosters got into a crowing contest. The first one would crow...

Then the other one would crow. Back and forth it went; each one was trying to outdo the other.

This rooster just ignored them for awhile...

Then he stood up and gave them lessons from an expert!

Note to my bird-watching friends: chickens are thought to be descendants of the Red Junglefowl, Gallus gallus. Now you know that, you can add Gallus gallus domesticus
to your birding lists!

Killdeer, November 9, 2016

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, November 7, 2016
Killdeer, Charadrius vociferous, are the most commonly seen plovers in the United States. There are 60 species of plovers worldwide; nine of them breed in North America.

Killdeer are classified as shorebirds, but are seen inland wherever there is water. Even a small pond may attract them. Listening for their loud calls, kill-dee kill-deer, is often the easiest way to locate them. A mated pair may stay together for several years.

They eat earthworms, crayfish, minnows, and insects. They also search harvested fields to find and eat left-over grain.

Have a wonderful day!

Muscovy Ducks
Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, October 31, 2016
These Muscovy Ducks, living on a pond in a city park, are not as wild as they would be if they were living in a more remote place. It was the iridescent green feathers that caught my attention as I walked around the lake at Veterans Park.
