Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, May 26, 2016
I know this is a little blurry, but I was thrilled to get this in-flight photo of a Great Blue Heron coming in with his dinner. He landed behind the rocks so I did not see if he was able to swallow such a large fish.

Hope you have a beautiful week-end!

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, March 29, 2016
Brown Thrashers, Toxostoma rufum, are widespread across the eastern half of the United States and may venture into southern Canada. They are in the same family as the Mockingbirds, and can sing a wide variety of musical notes.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, May 22, 2016
They are most often seen on the ground searching for insects, their primary food. They also eat seeds and berries. You may be able to attract them by placing feeders on or near the ground.

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, May 2, 2016
Chipping Sparrows, Spizella passerina, are wide-spread across the United States and Canada. Migratory birds, they winter in the southern US and Mexico. Seeds are their main food source, though they eat insects in the Summer. They like to line their nests with hair, and have been known to pluck hair from sleeping dogs!

Gum Tree Arts Festival, May 17, 2016

Tupelo, Mississippi, USA, May 14, 2016
Last Saturday we went to the Gum Tree Arts Festival in Tupelo.

Artists set up booths in the streets surrounding the Lee County Court House. Woodworkers, metal workers, stained glass artists, painters, photographers, and many more artists were displaying and selling their creations. Just about any kind of art a person was interested in, it was there!

I loved these bird houses!

And aren't these metal pieces wonderful!

And food! This is just a small section of the food vendors. A stage with musicians was set up in this area, too.

Gum Tree Arts Festival, May 14, 2016
As you may already know, Tupelo is the birthplace of Elvis Presley, and we are proud of our native son. There will be an Elvis Festival in June.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, May 2016

Northeast Mississippi, USA, zone 7
The blooms on this Running Rose are small, but there are hundreds of them!

This rose hangs its head down, so I have to lift the blooms to see them.

This is an old-fashioned rose called Burr Rose. Some of the leaves you see here are from a Wisteria Vine that is trying to take over. I must get in there and cut it down.

I think this is the prettiest of my Clematis vines. Shh! Don't tell the others!

This Coreopsis came from a packet of mixed seeds.

This Geranium is a new purchase. I like to have them in hanging baskets on my porch, but I don't have much luck trying to keep them through the Winter.

A few Pansies are still blooming.

A hopeful preview of things to come! I have planted Sunflower seeds!

Happy Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day!

Surprise Visitors, May 14, 2016

Saturday's Critters, Camera Critters, and I'd Rather B Birdin'

Saturday's Critters and Camera Critters
Toad with Marigolds, Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA
I bought four six-packs of Marigolds and just set them down on my porch temporarily. I had a surprise visitor before I found time to plant them!

I'd Rather B Birdin'
Another surprise visitor to our area
Prentiss county, Mississippi, USA, May 11, 2016
The Double-Crested Cormorant, Phalacrocorax auritus, can be found in rivers and lakes, and along coastlines. They are experts at diving to catch small fish. They are migratory birds, and this one is probably on its way north to their breeding grounds. The double-crest will appear with its breeding plumage. (This may be a female or a juvenile).

Rose-Breasted Grosbeak, May 11, 2016

ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday
R is for Rose-Breasted Grosbeak
Male Rose-Breasted Grosbeak, Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, April 28, 2016
With his rose-red breast and heavy bill, the male Rose-Breasted Grosbeak, Pheucticus ludovicianus, is easy to identify. They winter in Central America, and breed in the northern United States and Canada. On the way they stop at our feeders for Black-Oil Sunflower Seed. Their natural diet consists of insects, seeds, and berries.

Female Rose-Breasted Grosbeak, Lee County, Mississippi, USA, May 7, 2016
The female might be mistaken for a Sparrow until one notices her stout bill and her size (larger than a Sparrow). She may lay 3 to 5 eggs in her nest, and both parents incubate the eggs and feed the nestlings.

Tulip Popular, May 9, 2016

Tulip Popular tree blooms, Tishomingo County, Mississippi, USA, April 30, 2016
I spent the last week-end in April at a Camp Bluebird for Cancer Survivors. I went for a walk on Saturday morning and found these blooms on the trail, apparently blown down in Friday night's windstorm. A bottled water made an improvised vase. There are Camp Bluebirds all across the United States. I highly recommend them as a time of relaxation and refreshment for adult cancer survivors.

Mockingbird, May 7, 2016

Saturday's Critters, Camera Critters and I'd Rather B Birdin'

Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, April 4, 2016
The Northern Mockingbird is the state bird of Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas. They are loved for their wonderful singing, being able to imitate many other bird songs.

Just as I clicked the shutter, it leaned over to peck at someting on the rocks. I have a good laugh whenever I get a bird butt photo!
