Donkeys and Siskens, March 16, 2016

ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday

ABC Wednesday
J is for jack (a male donkey) and jenny (a female donkey)
Tishomingo County, Mississippi, USA, December 7, 2015
Donkeys are widespread around the globe, and they have been used as working animals for at least 5,000 years. In poor countries they are a primary source of farm labor and transportation. Here in the United States they are often used as guard animals for cattle. (If a coyote or other predator approaches, a donkey will bite, strike with its front legs, and kick with its hind legs). Yet they are gentle enough to be popular at fairs and petting zoos as children's entertainment.

Wild Bird Wednesday
Pine Sisken with sunflower seed in its bill
Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, March 9, 2016
Pine Siskens, Carduelis pinus, are members of the Finch family of birds. They are often seen across the northern United States and southern Canada. In Winter they wander down to the southern United States in search of food - preferably the seeds of hemlocks, alders, birches, and cedars. But just about any seed will do when the weather is cold!

Have a Wonderful Wednesday!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day, March 2016

Northeast Mississippi, USA zone 7
The white Iris are blooming.

The pink Hyacinths are outstanding this Spring.

I don't remember the name of these tiny Daffodils. When this bumblebee would light on a bloom, its weight would bend the stem down to the ground.

This wildflower is called 'Spring Beauty.'

The Ornamental Pear trees are blooming.

My first Hellebores blooms opened on January 3. The blooms are still hanging on, but they have faded from a dark pink to a lighter pink.

These buds are Red Buckeye. The Hummingbirds will arrive when the Buckeyes bloom!

Ospreys, March 9, 2016

Wild Bird Wednesday, Wednesday Waters, and ABC Wednesday,

Wild Bird Wednesday and Wednesday Waters
Pickwick Dam, Pickwick, Tennessee, USA, March 7, 2016

On Monday we drove up to Pickwick on the Tennessee River to check on the bird population. We saw only a few Gulls and Herons, but the great news is ...

High above the dam, the Ospreys are nesting again! Last year we saw only one baby bird in the nest. Let's hope for two this year.

Ospreys, Pandion haliaetus, are fish eaters, and can be found along the coastlines, large lakes, and rivers in both North and South America.

Hummingbirds, March 2, 2016

ABC Wednesday and Wild Bird Wednesday
H is for Hummingbirds

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, September 13, 2011

Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds, Archilochus colubris, are the most commonly seen Hummingbirds in the eastern half of the United States. These tiny birds (3 1/2 inches or 9cm) can fly backward as well as forward and average 50 wing beats per second. They catch tiny insects and sip nectar from flowers. Many people hang feeders filled with sugar water to attract them. (Unfortunately, sugar water also attracts wasps and ants).

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, September 6, 2015

The males have red feathers on their throats, and are very aggressive in chasing other males away from the feeders.

Prentiss County, Mississippi, USA, June 28, 2015

The females and juvenile males have white throats. It is not necessary for feeders to have perches as they can drink from the feeders while hovering.

A Christmas gift from a friend

They arrive at our house in April and stay through September. While they are away at their Winter homes in Mexico, I must be content with admiring them in works of art.
